Intelligent transportation is a critical component and necessary first step for any smart city. ITS integrates advanced communications technologies into the transportation infrastructure and vehicles. Transportation funding has often built the largest fiber optic and wireless infrastructure in a city.

ITS applications focus on both the infrastructure and vehicle as well as integrated applications between the two. Familiar ITS technologies include electronic toll collection, in-vehicle navigation systems, rear-end collision avoidance systems and dynamic message signs.


Innovation is taking place in many cities where they are creating innovation zones, connected corridors and smart spaces. Creating a connected environment where all elements can communicate is called V2X when using DSRC and C-V2X when using cellular. Other key connected capabilities are:

Safety is a major driver of ITS but improved operations has enormous benefits as well. The data generated by connected vehicles systems can provide transportation operations centers with detailed, real-time data on traffic volume, speeds, transit schedule status, parking availability, evolving weather conditions, and other roadway conditions. This information can be used to optimize the transit capacity, traffic signal timing or ramp meter operations, corridor management, incident and emergency response, variable speed limits, dynamic road pricing, road weather surface treatments, and improved real-time travel alerts and advisories, among others.

Vehicles communicate speed and location to infrastructure while infrastructure communicates its status to the vehicle.

Red Light Warning-Safety (V2I)

Platooning enables vehicles to communicate speed and location and drive at a higher rate of speed.
